Pauline L. Vail, 90, of Altamont, died at 10:10 p.m., Saturday, February 13, 2021 at HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital, Effingham.
Graveside services will be at 1:00 p.m., Friday, March 12, at Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery, rural Altamont with Kevin Knierim officiating. Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice. Gieseking Funeral Home, Altamont is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
Pauline was born on Tuesday, October 7, 1930 in Dexter, IL to Jesse and Birdie (Smith) Higgs. She married Kenneth E. Vail on November 3, 1951 in Altamont. She was a member of Salem Methodist Church, rural Altamont. In addition to raising her family she worked as a store cashier at the Bobber Truck Stop and Truckstops of America, Effingham until her retirement.
Surviving is her son, Bradford E. Vail and his wife Shirley of Oak Harbor, Washington; daughter, Connie Van Zanten and her husband Jack of Chester, Virginia; brother, Levitt Higgs and his wife Edie of Altamont; sisters, Wanda Phillips of Altamont, and Hilda Mae Shumaker of Effingham; 3 grandchildren, Matthew Van Zanten and his wife Angie of Choctaw, Oklahoma, Hank Van Zanten and his wife Teresa of Houston, Texas, and Heidi Van Zanten of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania; 2 great grandchildren, Andra and Lane Van Zanten of Choctaw, Oklahoma; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters, Christine Wilcox and Jessie Lou Hooks; and brother, Melvin Higgs.
