Marcella Rose Portz, 79, of Avena, died at 11:36 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2020 at HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham
A Funeral Mass was held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 30 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Elmo with Fr. Christudasan Kurisadima officiating. Burial will follow at St. Bonaventure Cemetery in rural St. Elmo. Visitation was held from 9 a.m. until service time at the church. Memorials may be made to St. Bonaventure Cemetery. Gieseking Funeral Home, Brownstown is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
Marcella was born on Wednesday, Dec. 18, 1940 in Vandalia to Flo Hoyle. She married Elmer Dean Portz on Sept. 6, 1958 at the St. Clare Rectory in Altamont. He preceded her in death in Sept. 15, 2014. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Elmo where she had served on the Altar Society. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by her son, David Portz and his wife Karen of St. Elmo; daughters, Cathy Sidwell and her companion Robert Workman of Effingham, Ramona Blankenship and her companion Roy McWhorter of St. Elmo, and Deborah Rosetto of Vandalia; seven grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.
Marcella was preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant daughter Regina Mae Portz, brother Rodney Hoyle, and son-in-law Marion Blankenship.
