The Bombers of Brownstown/St. Elmo took second place in the National Trail Conference Tournament last week. They earned victories over North Clay and Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City before falling to Altamont in the championship game 53-46.
The two teams met in Beecher City for the championship match on Saturday, Jan. 25. The Bombers opened up with an early lead as Audrey Wilhour, Olivia Campbell, and Claire Wilhour each hit three pointers in the first quarter and BSE racked up 15 points. Altamont hit a pair of three pointers in the first as they scored ten points. In the second quarter, the Bombers looked to stretch their lead as they got a pair of buckets from Natelly Beall and the team scored 12 total points. In Indians matched that 12 points to trail 27-22 at the halftime break.
In the third quarter, BSE hit a cold shooting patch, making just four buckets and adding a free throw from Campbell for nine points. The Indians scored 12 points to still trail by two entering the final quarter.
In the fourth, the Indians shut down Claire Wilhour, forcing her to the line rather than give up any easy field goals. Wilhour hit four of her six free throw attempts in the quarter and the Bomber added buckets from Natalie Oberlink, Campbell, and Audrey Wilhour. But the Indians attack on the other end was too strong as they put up 19 points to claim the victory thanks to seven points in the fourth from Brooke Runge.
Claire Wilhour finished as the leading scorer for BSE with 20 points along with six rebounds and three assists. Campbell and Obelrink both scored eight points while Beall and Audrey Wilhour both added six. Laney Baldrige added five points and four rebounds.
To get to the championship game, the Bombers needed overtime to knock off the host Bobcats of CHBC, 55-53.
BSE held an early lead 13-10 after the first quarter. The Bobcats battled back in the second, outscoring the Bombers 11-7 to hold a 21-20 halftime lead. In the third, BSE put up 16 points to retake a three point lead heading into the fourth quarter. Claire Wilhour scored ten of the Bombers 12 points in the fourth, but their opponents put up 15 to force overtime. Wilhour then scored five in overtime while Oberlink added another bucket to narrowly edge past the Bobcats.
Wilhour finished with 24 points and three rebounds. Campbell added 15 points, five rebounds, three assists, and five steals. Oberlink also finished in double digits in points with 14 while adding 11 rebounds. Audrey Wilhour added two points and four rebounds while Beall collected seven boards.
