In a world of ever increasing mass production and globalized commerce, it is rare to have access to locally sourced, handmade products in your neighborhood. That is exactly what Ashley Potter is offering customers at Greenhouse Skin & Spa in downtown St. Elmo.
The newly opened business offers a variety of services and skin products all made locally by hand, including hand and face cream made with goats milk from a nearby goat farm. All the products used at Greenhouse Skin & Spa are organic and handmade from a variety of fruits, vegetables, herbs, botanicals, and essential oils. A variety of facials and waxings are available in a clean, comfortable environment.
Potter, a St. Elmo native, has been creating her own skin products for many years and decided to bring her gift to the public. “A friend of mine asked one day why I wasn’t doing something with my skills. She really pushed me and gave me the motivation to open my own place.”
But the spa business is nothing new to Potter. She graduated from Robert Morris with a bachelors in business. After several unhappy years of working in the world of business, Potter realized she needed a change. “I thought, ‘what do I love?’ – skin care,” stated Potter as she decided to make a career move. After attending the University of Spa and Cosmetology Arts in Springfield, Potter was certified to begin working in the spa world.
She worked in several local salons and spas in Springfield before running her own place inside of the ‘Inn at 835’ in Springfield. This is where she really began working with organic materials in her skin care products for the first time.
Now that Potter is back in her home town, she is bringing her all natural, organic skin products to the public. “I’ve done a lot of research on creating organic products to perfect my formula. I wanted to be able to be my own boss and run my own spa without being tied to a specific skin care line,” stated Potter.
Running a spa that is totally organic and uses only handmade products is a rare thing. Ashley said that in her research she only found a handful of places in the entire country that are doing that, so that puts Greenhouse Skin & Spa in rare company.
As far as the services provided, Ashley can cater her facials to her clients. “We offer four different types of facials and I can adjust them for each person’s skin type, whether they have oily skin, dry skin, acne, or troubled skin.” Facials at Greenhouse start at just $25 and can last anywhere from 25 minutes to two hours, depending on the level of treatment wanted.
Potter also offers a variety of face and body waxing. She can do anything from eyebrows to a full removal.
All products used at Greenhouse are available for purchase along with a selection of handmade jewelry, which all comes from raw uncut gemstones. All natural leather and hemp from local sources are used in all the jewelry. Necklaces, earrings, keychains, and bracelets are available and all are unique one of a kind handmade pieces.
