Dorothy E. Verdeyen, 90, of Altamont, died at 5:35 p.m., Thursday, August 10, 2017 at HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital, Effingham.
Funeral Mass was held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, August, 15, 2017 at St. Clare Catholic Church, Altamont with Rev. John Savoree officiating. Burial will follow at St. Clare Cemetery, Altamont. Visitation was 5 – 8 p.m., Monday, August 14 at Gieseking Funeral Home, Altamont. Memorials may be made to St. Clare Catholic Church or the donor’s choice.
Dorothy was born on Monday, August 23, 1926 in Lillyville, rural Cumberland County, IL to Louis and Emma (Westendorf) Willenborg. She married Henry Verdeyen on October 4, 1945 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Lillyville. She was a member of St. Clare Catholic Church. She was a former member of the St. Clare Altar Society, had volunteered with Meals on Wheels and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. She was a homemaker and formerly had been employed at St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital, Altamont Garment Factory, Dutch Pantry Restaurant and Gilbert’s Family Restaurant and Altamont High School.
She is survived by her husband of over 71 years, Henry of Altamont; sons, John Verdeyen and his wife Dorothy and Mike Verdeyen and his wife Emma of Altamont; daughters, Barb Stewart of Brownstown, Theresa Verdeyen of Altamont, Jane Meier and her husband Roger of Centralia and Deb Wright of Altamont; sisters, Martha Bushue of Mason and Nellie Donsbach of Effingham; 12 grandchildren, Todd Verdeyen and his wife Tina of Altamont, Meredith Stewart and Travis Stewart, both of Brownstown, Tonya Flach and her husband Mike of Altamont, Jennifer Arnold and her husband Jeff of Effingham, Tanner Meier and his wife Amie of Patoka, Dustin Meier and his wife Jona of Centralia, Tai Kasban and her husband Rick of Ashley, Jessica Arnold and her husband Dave of Champaign, Vanessa Wright of Altamont, Megan Althoff and her husband Devin of St. Joseph, and Molly Verdeyen of Altamont; 16 great grandchildren and one on the way; Quinn, Pierce, Anneke, McKenna, Clayton, Hayden, Olivia, Norah, Evan, Logan, Devin, Ava, Brody, Chase, Kaylee, and Loren.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, a son in infancy, daughter, Patricia, 2 brothers and 2 brothers in infancy, 1 sister and 1 son-in-law.
